Background of the study
Media plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, and effective translation is critical in ensuring clear communication between linguistic communities. In Ibadan, Yoruba–English translation in media settings, including news broadcasts, interviews, and talk shows, is conducted by professional interpreters whose performance directly impacts the quality of information disseminated. This study assesses the performance of interpreters working in Yoruba–English translation, examining factors such as linguistic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and real-time processing skills (Olatunji, 2023). The dynamic nature of media requires interpreters to manage rapid exchanges while accurately conveying the intended messages across languages. Challenges such as idiomatic discrepancies, speed of speech, and differing syntactic structures add layers of complexity to the task (Akinola, 2024). By analyzing recorded media segments, interviewing media professionals, and reviewing performance evaluations, the research aims to provide a comprehensive appraisal of interpreter effectiveness. The findings will offer insights into the strengths and limitations of current practices and suggest training interventions that can improve translation performance in media contexts (Olatunji, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the essential role of interpreters in Yoruba–English media translation, several challenges undermine their performance in Ibadan. Issues such as misinterpretation of idiomatic expressions, delays in real-time translation, and occasional cultural insensitivity have been reported, affecting the clarity and reliability of media communications (Akinola, 2024). These shortcomings not only compromise the quality of news and public discourse but also risk distorting critical information for bilingual audiences. Inconsistent interpreter training and lack of standardized evaluation criteria further exacerbate these problems. This study seeks to identify the core challenges affecting interpreters’ performance in media translation and to propose solutions that can enhance translation accuracy and efficiency (Olatunji, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the current performance of interpreters in Yoruba–English media translation.
  2. To identify challenges that impact translation accuracy and efficiency.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving interpreter training and performance.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are interpreters in delivering accurate Yoruba–English translations in media?
  2. What challenges hinder their performance in real-time translation?
  3. What training and evaluation measures can enhance their performance?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates interpreters’ performance in Yoruba–English translation within Ibadan media. The insights gained will benefit media organizations, interpreter training programs, and policymakers by identifying areas for improvement. Enhancing interpreter performance is crucial for ensuring accurate communication and fostering public trust in media reporting (Olatunji, 2023; Akinola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing interpreters’ performance in Yoruba–English translation in media contexts in Ibadan. It does not extend to other language pairs or informal communication settings.

Definitions of terms:

  • Interpreters: Professionals who facilitate real-time translation between languages.
  • Media translation: The process of converting spoken or written content for broadcast and publication.
  • Performance evaluation: The assessment of quality and effectiveness in translation work.
